SUMMARY:Merdeka and Malaysia Day Celebration: ‘Ibu Merdeka buat Ibu Pertiwi’ (translates to Independence for Malaysian Mothers\, and for the Motherland)
DESCRIPTION:This celebration saw around 45 attendees\, including 20 youths and two influential youth speakers (Sarrah Salihan and Ain Husniza) who both gave messages of solidarity for Malaysian mothers impacted by gender-discriminatory nationality laws. The highlight of their speeches came when these young women voiced their concerns about possibly encountering similar challenges if they married non-citizens. The event also featured activities like postcard colouring\, where participants penned messages to the Prime Minister. One poignant message\, written by a child of a Malaysian mother still waiting for citizenship\, read: “Hello Mr. Anwar Ibrahim\, can I be a Malaysian like my mum? Please make it happen.” The event concluded with a symbolic paper plane flying session\, representing freedom.
