The event was also a space for mothers and children to build relationships with others in the community with hopes of strengthening mothers and children mentally and emotionally\, equipping them with coping tools throughout the rest of their advocacy journey and equal citizenship struggles.

DESCRIPTION:Family Frontiers collaborated with the Malaysian Institute for Debate and Public Speaking (MIDP) and Taylor’s University to participate in a two-day event focused on promoting healthy discourse among youths on critical social\, political\, cultural\, economic\, environmental\, and human rights issues in Malaysia. \nDuring the event\, Family Frontiers ran an advocacy booth to raise awareness on the plight of Malaysian mothers in their pursuit for equal citizenship rights. Impacted mothers\, Bibie\, Aniza\, and Saweza\, shared their personal experiences and challenges with more than 100 attendees and also had the opportunity to speak to Deputy Minister of Youth & Sports\, YB Adam Adli\, former Member of Parliament\, Dr. Ong Kian Ming.

SUMMARY:Public Perception Survey on #PindaPerkara14
DESCRIPTION:In May 2023\, Family Frontiers launched the results of a public opinion survey to gather data on perceptions Malaysians had towards equal citizenship rights for Malaysian women and their children. The survey which was done in collaboration with Vase.ai was conducted from 16 – 19 November 2022\, across diverse race and gender and demographic groups\, sought to highlight the public sentiment surrounding the issue from various thematic areas\, reflecting the need to realise this long-standing reform. \nThe findings of this survey are now a key part of Family Frontiers’ advocacy and serve as an essential resource to inform key decision makers such as Members of Parliament\, Government Agencies and Human Rights Institutions.

The event that took place in Taman Jaya\, Petaling Jaya saw roughly 80 participants\, including Members of Parliament and Senators across the political divide\, civil society organisations\, persons of influence and members of the public. Present at the event were policymakers from across the political divide\, including the chief of the women’s wing of a political party part of the present ruling coalition. Policymakers publicly stated their support towards the campaign and called out the Government’s lack of urgency on the matter. Family Frontiers’ short film ‘Anak Ibu\, Anak Malaysia’ premiered at the Freedom Film Festival. The screening was followed by a panel discussion featuring Aini and her family\, as well as Family Frontiers’ Lead Coordinator Bina Ramanand. The audience received info cards with campaign calls to action and postcards addressed to the Prime Minister urging for the reform of Malaysia’s gender-discriminatory citizenship laws. The event was attended by approximately 120 people.

The event ended with second-generation impacted children singing their hearts out to the song ‘Saya Anak Malaysia’\, as their struggles to be recognised as citizens in their mothers’ homeland continue.
