Press Conference – #PindaPerkara14UntukIbu: Malaysian Mothers Left Disheartened as Government Abandons Promised Retroactivity for Amendment

On June 19, 2024, Family Frontiers organised a press conference urging the Malaysian Government to amend the constitution to grant Malaysian women rights to confer citizenship to their children-born overseas retroactively. Speakers included Suriani Kempe, Family Frontiers Exco, and Chee Yoke Ling, Family Frontiers Vice President, along with impacted mothers Shamila, Amelia Tai (via Zoom), Gayani, and Christine. The speakers shared their lived-experiences and hardships, urging the government to retroactively apply the amendment and ask the Home Ministry reasons behind the rejections for the children’s citizenship applications. 40 individuals, including journalists from mainstream and alternative media, representatives from Civil Society Organisations and Malaysian mothers from our network were in attendance.
