Screening at Freedom Film Festival of ‘Anak Ibu, Anak Malaysia’

September 11, 2022 @ 12:00 am

Family Frontiers organised a gathering in support and solidarity of Malaysian women’s equal citizenship rights in line with Malaysia’s National Day. The event that took place in Taman Jaya, Petaling Jaya saw roughly 80 participants, including Members of Parliament and Senators across the political divide, civil society organisations, persons of influence and members of the public. Present at the event were policymakers from across the political divide, including the chief of the women’s wing of a political party part of the present ruling coalition. Policymakers publicly stated their support towards the campaign and called out the Government’s lack of urgency on the matter. Family Frontiers’ short film ‘Anak Ibu, Anak Malaysia’ premiered at the Freedom Film Festival. The screening was followed by a panel discussion featuring Aini and her family, as well as Family Frontiers’ Lead Coordinator Bina Ramanand. The audience received info cards with campaign calls to action and postcards addressed to the Prime Minister urging for the reform of Malaysia’s gender-discriminatory citizenship laws. The event was attended by approximately 120 people.
