FOR NON-MUSLIMS #
For non-Muslim Malaysians with foreign spouses who have married abroad and registered their marriage under the civil law of a foreign country, they are required to re-register their marriage under Section 31 of the Law Reform (Marriage & Divorce) Act 1976 after 01 March 1982 either at the nearest National Registration Department or Malaysian Embassy, High Commission or Consulate.
This application is only for non-Muslim Malaysians whose marriages are registered under the laws of a foreign country.
They are required to re-register their marriage within 6 months:
- After the date of the marriage; or
- After arrival in Malaysia (before the expiry of 6 months under paragraph (a) and the couple return to Malaysia
Re-registration of marriage shall not apply to a person who was granted Malaysian citizenship status after his or her marriage was registered under the laws of a foreign country.
APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS #
- The couple is required to be present at the NRD counter or Malaysian Representative Offices abroad for the application and registration of marriage.
- A marriage registered under the laws of a foreign country must be re-registered at the Malaysian Representative Office within 6 months of the date of marriage. If the couple enters Malaysia before the expired 6 months of the date where the marriage was registered under the laws of a foreign country, then the calculation of 6 months will commence on the latest arrival date in Malaysia dictated in the passport.
- Re-registration after 6 months after the date of registration of marriage outside Malaysia will incur a penalty of RM100.00 for the first year and RM50.00 for each subsequent year or part thereof.
DOCUMENTS REQUIRED #
The documents required for re-registration of the marriage in Malaysia are as follows:
- Form JPN.KC06 duly filled

- ORIGINAL MyKad (for Malaysian citizens).
- ORIGINAL passport and photocopy of page with personal details and latest arrival date in Malaysia for Malaysian and non-citizen, if applicable.
- ORIGINAL passport and photocopy of page with personal details and date in the passport during which the marriage was registered in the pertinent country for Malaysian and non-citizen.
- Identity documents used for marriage registration in the foreign country for non-citizen, if applicable.
- One (1) colour passport-sized photograph per applicant.
- Foreign marriage certificate (ORIGINAL and photocopy)
- Foreign marriage certificate from India, Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines, Nigeria, Sri Lanka or any other country if required, must be:
- Certified by either the Malaysian representative in their home country. or the applicant’s consulate in Malaysia, and
- Re-certified by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Wisma Putra) in Putrajaya, Kuching or Kota Kinabalu
- The marriage certificate from Vietnam must be re-certified by the Vietnam embassy in Malaysia.
- Foreign marriage certificate from India, Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines, Nigeria, Sri Lanka or any other country if required, must be:
- Birth Certificate of non-citizen spouse (ORIGINAL and photocopy)
- Decree nisi absolute (divorce certificate), if applicable (ORIGINAL and photocopy).
- Death certificate of the previous spouse, if applicable (ORIGINAL and photocopy)
- For a citizen of Myanmar, a letter from the Myanmar government to confirm the validity of Myanmar’s marriage certificate.
- A Confirmation letter stated that the applicant is not a Muslim from the respective government (i.e., Iran, Iraq, Egypt, Algeria, Pakistan, Bangladesh or other Muslim countries or from any other country if required).
- Please note that all the documents must be original in Malay or English otherwise you must include an ORIGINAL Malay or English translation by a qualified translator.
The translation must include the name, signature contact details of the translator and date of the translation.
The applications can be submitted at the National Registration Department (Jabatan Pendaftaran Negara) or Malaysian Representative Office abroad.
